The American Board of Certified Hair Colorist is a board of professional peers. It was established in the 1980's as a way to create standardized criteria in, credibility and consistent quality in the professional hair colorist. The 3 part, 8 hours exam was designed to measure the competence of the applicant’s hair coloring skills and methods.

Colorists are tested on Practical, Written, & Interactive criteria and has a current average passing rate of only 30%-40%

Passing the ABCH exam is considered one of the highest accomplishments a hairdresser can acheive.
